As Missions Coordinator for the Episcopal Church Women, Diocese of NC, I am writing to ask for your participation in the Christmas Mission Fund. This fund is a designated gift to missions inside or outside the diocese.

Girls on the Run is an international program that began in Charlotte, NC, 25 years ago. The program began so that girls of different backgrounds, races, and ethnicities could have a safe place to develop physical, emotional, and social skills. Many girls experience a drop off in self-confidence in the years leading up to puberty and there is also a decrease in their physical activity.

Fifty percent of girls aged 10-12 experience bullying. Running is just a tool to teach girls empowerment. Using a research-based curriculum, Girls on the Run helps develop inner strength and make healthy connections to others. It is an after-school program for grades 3-5. At the end of the 8-10 week season a non-competitive 5K run is completed. This combination of discussions and physical activities is designed to inspire girls to become confident and kind young women with increased decision-making skills.
